Our 39th 50 Fund Playmaker is Loco Bloco, which was founded by artists and activists of color in the traditions of the Afro-Blocos of Brazil. Their mission is to promote San Francisco youth’s healthy transition into adulthood by engaging them in the creation and performance of music, dance and theater rooted in Afro-Latino traditions.
Their Playmaker grant will be used to support their “Sonido Del Barrio” program (The Sound of the Neighborhood) which celebrates the families, artists, musicians and activists who have contributed to the culture and vibrancy of the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco.
Loco Bloco have recognized Sabrina Yerena as their Playmaker and our third Rookie Playmaker because she embodies their core values of youth leadership, activism, education and grit. After enrolling for summer programming with the desire to learn how to dance, Sabrina continued through their Youth Apprentice program, and participated in leadership and arts education training. In the past three years, she has become the most requested Class Assistant by their instructors, as well as a principal performer in their Performing Ensemble.
The 50 Fund’s Rookie Playmaker program drafted by Levi’s® brand recognizes youth ages 13-24 who are making a difference in the Bay Area by protecting the environment and advocating for community members in need.
“While Sabrina’s personal achievements are impressive, it is her commitment and dedication to her community that makes her a Playmaker; when Sabrina learns a new skill she immediately transitions from a student to teacher and is constantly looking out for a person to pass along the lesson to,” said Anne Jupiter-Jones, Executive Director of Loco Bloco, “The vigor Sabrina brings to her performance, teaching and peer-leadership in Loco Bloco is true embodiment of our mission and work.”
50 weeks. 50 grants. 50 opportunities to recognize Bay Area residents who are making a difference through their service to our community in celebration of Super Bowl 50. The 50 Fund’s Playmaker program was designed to showcase the real difference Bay Area nonprofits are making in the lives of our children, and people behind the scenes who are making that impact possible.
Every Tuesday, the 50 Fund – the legacy fund of the San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee – will reveal a new Playmaker and share that nonprofit’s story of inspiration.
